# Explanationless Progress is Impossible
There is an argument that [Progress](Progress.md) with an [Explanation](Explanations.md) is impossible. This is an [Argument](Argument.md) and not a proof, but it is quite compelling.
Consider the known ways of making progress. We can start with [Conjecture and Criticism](Conjecture%20and%20Criticism.md). This is the way by which we seek good explanations. So progress achieved via conjecture and criticism most certainly requires explanations.
We then have [Evolution](Evolution.md). It creates progress through a process of blind trial and error. It also creates knowledge. There are only two known ways of creating new knowledge: [Through Conjecture and Criticism and Evolution](Knowledge%20is%20Created%20Through%20Conjecture%20and%20Criticism%20and%20Evolution.md). However, evolution is non-explanatory.
[Explanations Provide a Fundamentally Different Structure and Search Process](Explanations%20Provide%20a%20Fundamentally%20Different%20Structure%20and%20Search%20Process.md). Without this extended progress is not possible.
