# Rational Inquiry Requires Pursuing Good Explanations
In order to make [Progress](Progress.md) via argument, it is essential that all participants have a shared rational world view. This requires that [We Must Seek Good Explanations](We%20Must%20Seek%20Good%20Explanations.md). For example, if you were in an argument with someone who didn't seek *good* [Explanations](Explanations.md), but merely *exciting* and *witty* explanations, you would never be able to get anywhere. The rational foundation required for discourse that can lead to progress would not be in place.
The drive to seek good [Explanations](Explanations.md) is the core principle that [Forces Us To Take a Position](Forced%20To%20Take%20a%20Position.md). It is the foundation of [Rationality](Rationality.md).
