# Resting Law
The **Resting Law** was first proposed by Aristotle, who stated that the natural state of all objects was to be stationary. According to Aristotle, moving objects left alone will slow down and come to rest. An object can continue to move only if it is being pushed.
We now know that the resting law is *false*. Rather [Newtons First Law](Newtons%20First%20Law.md) is true. If the resting law were true, then the sun, moon and earth would all slow down. The moon would crash into the earth, then the molten remains would crash into the sun. All planets and stars in the universe would suffer the same fate. Gravity would rule the universe, destroying everything in it.
