# Break out of Binary Thinking To break out of binary thinking, we can use the following techniques: ### 1. Vanishing Options When choosing between two options, imagine option A was no longer available and you were forced to chose B. Now, imagine B was no longer available and you were forced to chose A. What would you do in each of these scenarios. What new options would you create? For example, imagine A is -> leave your company, and B is -> stay and deal with a coworker you hate. ### 2. This *and* That options When we think in *this* or *that* about our choices, we neglect to see how our solutions can work together. For example, in your career can you stay at your job *and* updated your resume, *and* reach out to your network. Can you do anything in addition to your job that will give you the outlet you need and improve your capabilities and engagement at work? > We want to ask: "How can I do this ***and*** that?" ### 3. Explore Opportunity Cost As decision makers we often think about what we are *gaining* and forget to factor in what we are *giving up*. We forget to explore the [Opportunity Cost](Opportunity%20Cost.md). ### 4. Gather More Information Remember, [the source of all bad decisions](Decision.md#Source%20of%20all%20bad%20decisions). Ask yourself, what information would help you decide? Or, what information would change your mind? Gathering more information allows other options to present themselves.
