# Random Variable A **random variable** is essentially a [Function](Function.md) (mapping) from the sample space $\Omega$ of a probability model to the set of real numbers $\mathbb{R}$. Three ![](Untitled%2012.png) ### Example Consider that $\Omega$ is a set of 100 people. A rv could be their height or weight. Each maps an $\omega$ (a person, clearly a person is not a number) in $\Omega$ to a real value in $\mathbb{R}$. There is a lot more to be seen in the [Cumulative Distribution Function](Cumulative%20Distribution%20Function.md) notes. --- Date: 20211007 Links to: [Probability MOC](Probability%20MOC.md) [Cumulative Distribution Function](Cumulative%20Distribution%20Function.md) Tags: References: * Discrete Stochastic Processes Notes, Gallagher ([here](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DsCW0L8lLt6YdF2SBNK73UJh1oUcerwQ/view?usp=sharing))
